Working Wethers

Saanens make for great working wethers. They have the size and the power to work hard, yet have an easy and docile temperament. These photos are of my working wethers, Leonard and Levi. They are American Saanen, and will be 2 years old in April, 2001.

In 1999, I had a surplus of baby bucks. I decided to keep a pair of wethers to raise to train to harness. My original plan was to train them to cart. Today my husband, Brad, was trudging up the mountain with his chain saw. When I asked what he was doing, he said he was going for some White Oak logs for his annual Shiitake Mushroom planting. I suggested that when he had his logs ready to bring down the mountain, to give me a holler and I'd harness up Levi and Leonard to bring the logs down for him. The log they are pulling is 27 feet long, 6" in diameter. Brad will cut this log into 8 sections, and will inoculate them with Shiitake Mushroom spawn. Each log section should produce 20# of Shiitakes in 2002.

This log came off the mountain in one long pull, while the humans just walked along with the wethers! Everyone should have a pair of these working wethers. It turns a Big Job into Big Fun!
